The Kent Test, also known as the KCC or PESE, is the shared 11+ entrance exam used by all 32 Kent grammar schools, from The Judd School and The Skinners' School to Dartford Grammar School, Dartford Grammar School for Girls, Weald of Kent Grammar School, Invicta Grammar School and Tonbridge Grammar School. It is set by GL Assessment, confirmed as the provider for 2027 entry (the test is sat in autumn 2026). Children are tested across three main areas: English, Maths, and Reasoning, where Reasoning combines Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning in one paper, with spatial-reasoning items mixed into the Non-Verbal Reasoning section rather than tested on their own. There is also a discretionary writing task, but it is not machine-marked and does not count towards the three standardised scores that make up a child's result. It is kept in reserve only so a headteacher panel can look at it if a place is borderline or under appeal. One school, The Skinners' School, sets its own qualifying score 40 points above the standard Kent Test threshold, though every candidate sits the same test paper, so that is a scoring difference, not a different exam. Weald of Kent Grammar School is the one exception on format: it accepts either the standard Kent Test or its own separate Weald of Kent assessment, while every other Kent grammar school requires the Kent Test itself. Kent County Council has also floated re-procuring a different provider for a new contract running from March 2027 to February 2029, but that covers the cycle after the 2026 sitting: GL Assessment remains the confirmed provider for 2027 entry.

What the Kent Test Test Includes
Maths
A multiple-choice paper covering Key Stage 2 maths: number, fractions, decimals, percentages, ratio, measures, shape and data. Speed and accuracy under time both matter.
English
A multiple-choice paper of comprehension, spelling, punctuation, grammar and vocabulary. There is no separate writing task to hand in for the main result, so the skill is reading closely and choosing the best answer quickly.
Verbal Reasoning
The Verbal Reasoning half of Kent's combined Reasoning paper: synonyms and antonyms, letter and number codes, word patterns and short logic puzzles, all multiple choice.
Kent's Reasoning paper combines Verbal Reasoning with Non-Verbal Reasoning in a single paper, and folds spatial-reasoning items into the Non-Verbal Reasoning section rather than testing them on their own.
